When prepping for family photography sessions, I often hear from parents who want me to know ahead of our sessions that their kids are “high energy” or “highly anxious” or “sensitive” or that they may be “difficult.” Sometimes they mention a diagnosis, other times it’s just a description of behaviors. This year, I’ve been focusing on better understanding and serving our neurodivergent (ND) community.
Did you know that 1 in 5 kids are neurodivergent?
I certainly didn’t! To me, this means we should absolutely be doing a better job of embracing, accepting and celebrating our neurodivergent children – in our communities, in our schools, and beyond.
Adapting Environments
I think this is the most important adjustment to consider at future photo shoots. I want to remove barriers and create a safe and inclusive environment for neurodivergent children. This might look like choosing to stay home for your shoot so we can engage in an activity of your child’s choice – making art together, playing chess, dancing, whatever!
This could also look like being more aware of sensory sensitivities: watching the volume of my voice, being thoughtful where we plan to shoot (a quiet location without distractions might be best!), and building in time for your child to take “quiet time” breaks when needed.
Reframing Expectations
We shouldn’t expect ND kids to communicate, think, act, play, etc. like neurotypical kids. So I won’t assume my usual games and prompts will work the same way. If you have a ND kid, feel free to chat with me about your child’s abilities and sensitivities so I can tailor the experience.
Respecting Autonomy
A “no” is always a “no.” We’ll pivot and adjust without judgment, ensuring your child feels respected and in control. I love to make sessions into “games” so they never feel forced into doing something they are uncomfortable with.
Learning and Growing Together
I’ve always been one to roll with what’s happening during sessions, which I think is one of my strengths. However, there’s always room to grow. By learning more about the various ways that neurodivergence shows up and strategies to meet ND kids where they are, I aim to better serve this growing segment of my client base.
Resources for Learning More
I’ve put together a round-up of resources I’ve found helpful as I’ve started to educate myself on this important topic!

Kids Books
If you happen to know someone looking for a family photographer who’s happy to work with ND families, don’t hesitate share my name. And if you are one of those families, I’d be honored to work with you. Let’s make memories that truly reflect your child’s unique spirit!
