What to Wear for Fall Family Photos | Washington, DC Family Photographer

It’s officially fall photo season, and if you’re wondering what to wear for your upcoming session, don’t worry, I’ve got you!

Whether we’re shooting among the turning leaves, cozying up in tall grasses, or strolling through a favorite DC neighborhood, I know outfit planning can feel like a lot. So let’s break it down together with my go-to advice and a few fresh color palettes to inspire you this season.

First, My #1 Styling Rule

You’ve probably heard me say it before, but it’s worth repeating: Start with mom’s outfit. When mom feels confident and comfortable, it sets the tone for the entire session. So pick what you want to wear first, and build everyone else’s looks around that.

What Photographs Well in Fall

Fall sessions tend to be full of golden light, crunchy leaves, and rich tones, which means texture and warmth are your best friends. Think cozy knits, layers, suede booties, or flowy fabrics with a bit more weight than what you’d wear in spring.

As you’re putting together outfits, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Mix, don’t match: Coordinating color stories always look better than everyone wearing the same thing.
  • Add interest with texture: Corduroy, knits, denim, lace, or even a wool hat can make a simple outfit pop.
  • Keep the backdrop in mind: If we’re shooting at a location with lots of greenery, avoid wearing bright greens that might blend in.

Fall 2025 Color Palettes We’re Loving

Below are three palette families I’m loving this season. Choose one that fits your family’s vibe and the look you want for your final gallery. And don’t worry! If you’re still stuck, I’ve got links below to some of my favorite shoppable outfits for each member of the fam!

Fall Jewel Tones

Forest, Orchid, Mustard, Ivory
These colors feel luxurious and timeless, especially paired with wintery whites. Think of jewel tones as a way to bring depth to your images without being too loud.

Earthy Neutrals

Olive, Terracotta, Tan, Ivory
This palette plays beautifully with fall foliage and suits more rustic or nature-based sessions. Layered earth tones always feel cozy and relaxed.

Bold Primary-Inspired

White, Burgundy, Navy, Mustard
If you love a pop of contrast, this color family is for you. These tones look amazing against both urban and natural backdrops and give your gallery a fun, vibrant energy.

A Few Bonus Tips:

  • Avoid neon colors: They can reflect onto skin and distract from your faces.
  • Mind the footwear: If we’re heading into a field, opt for boots or shoes you don’t mind getting dusty.
  • Think layers: Not just for warmth, but for styling too! A sweater over a dress, a jacket over a jumpsuit—layers add dimension.

Still Not Sure What to Wear?

Don’t overthink it. The best photos happen when everyone feels relaxed, comfortable, and free to be themselves. Choose clothes that feel good, allow for movement, and make you smile when you see them in the mirror.

And if you want a second opinion or a little help pulling everything together? I’m always here for that. Outfit planning might not be your thing, but it is mine.
