What to Wear for Your In-Home Lifestyle Session | Washington, DC Family Photographer

The last thing I want you to feel is intimidated by choosing outfits for your family session! One of the reasons I love, love, love capturing families in their homes is because it’s where where you’re most comfortable which makes you more natural and makes it easier for me to capture the personality and heart of a family. And the same goes for clothing! When you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, it shows in the photos.

Plan Ahead

This is also why it’s important to plan ahead, and make sure that everyone involved is happy about what they are going to wear. It’s the only way you’ll keep loving your photos year in and year out.

Before diving into the steps for selecting your family’s outfits we recommend, let’s look at two ways to ensure you’re making the “comfort first” pick for yourself and your family.

Look for Flattering Fits

Everyone (regardless of shape and size) has parts of their body that they’re not so fond of. Even super models! The key is knowing this in advance and keeping it in mind as you select your outfit. Be sure to choose something doesn’t draw attention to these areas. Look for flattering silhouettes and colors that complement your natural features. Pro-tip: long, flow dresses are super flattering on EVERYONE!

Do the Movement Test!

Another thing to keep in mind is that we’ll be doing a lot of moving during my sessions. Can you sit, stand and lay comfortably in the outfit you’ve chosen? As far as shoes go, a lot of my clients choose to go barefoot for their in-home sessions, but if you feel more comfortable with your tootsies covered – there’s no judgement here! But leave the stilettos in the closet. There’s just too much fun to be had and heels slow us down!

How to Approach Colors & Patterns for Your Family’s Outfits

  1. Choose a palette that fits your season & location
    • Since I only use natural light, we’ll be in the rooms of your home with the most windows. Consider the colors already in these rooms when selecting your palette.
  2. Moms get to choose their outfits first! Everyone else’s outfits coordinate with hers.
  3. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns. Just be sure to mix the sizes of patterns. So if Dad wears a large checkered shirt, have sister wear a small floral pattern.
  4. Consider adding texture: linens, knits, faux furs, chiffons and other flowy materials.
  5. If you love what you’ve put together, BOOM – you’re done!

Avoid THESE!

Now that we’ve chatted about what to look for when selecting your family’s outfits, let’s chat about some elements that don’t photograph as well.

  • Logos or Words
  • Neon
  • Polo Shirts
  • Too Many Accessories (less is more)
  • Exact Matching Outfits or Colors
  • Something That’s Not “You”

With this is mind, don’t go boring just because you’re scared to make a mistake! Pull together outfits that show who you are – be that colorful and eclectic, or chic and layered. When in doubt we’re always here provide feedback on what will look best from behind the camera.

When it comes to selecting outfits for your in-home lifestyle session, it’s all about being comfortable and like yourself by selecting flattering fits you can move in. Once you’ve chosen a palette (and mom’s outfit!) you can add in patterns and textures to create depth in your overall outfit combos. While there are some distracting styles you’ll want to avoid, don’t be afraid to be YOU! And keep in mind that the Mary Catherine Photography team is always here to provide feedback or connect you with our complimentary styling service.
